Brazil joins the Hague System

Brazil has joined the Hague System for the registration of international designs, bringing the total number of countries covered to 79.

With Brazil’s accession, the Hague System will cover nine of the ten top economic markets according to the World Bank’s rankings.

Members of the Hague System include the European Union, the UK, Russia and the U.S.

Brazil deposited its instrument of accession to the 1999 Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement on February 13th 2023.

From August 1st this year, international applicants can use the system to apply for design protection in Brazil

Likewise, designers and companies based in Brazil will be able to seek international protection in the 78 other countries covered by the Hague System after this dates.

Mauritius has also joined the Hague system, acceding on February 6th. With these two accessions, WIPO’s international design system now spans across 96 countries.

The Hague System, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is a way of filing a design in multiple jurisdictions with one application.
