THE TRADE MARK 20
Louise Foster

I work as a… Senior Associate and Trade Mark Attorney at Venner Shipley LLP.
Before this role, I… was a languages student and had jobs including bank cashier and helping write a museum guide.
My current state of mind is… optimistic.
I became interested in IP when… I met a Patent Attorney while on my year abroad in Munich. He told me about the Trade Mark Attorney profession, and the more I looked into it the more I liked the sound of it.
I am most inspired by… people who can consistently keep things really clear and simple.
In my role, I most enjoy… guiding clients new to trade marks through the registration process. You forget how peculiar some aspects of the IP world can seem from the outside.
“I can always switch off when I am trying a new recipe”
In my role, I most dislike… having to say no to a client. It is hard to tell someone that something they’ve created isn’t going to work.
On my desk is… not loads apart from my screens and keyboard. I try to keep it as clutter-free as possible. I do have an “I heart IP” badge stuck to my monitor though!
My favourite mug says… nothing. It is pink and orange and just brightens up the morning.
My favourite place to visit on business is… anywhere in Europe.
If I were a trade mark/brand, I would be… John Lewis. Friendly, trustworthy and communicates reliable quality – things to aspire to in my view!
The biggest challenge for IP is… the rise of online infringement. It is increasingly hidden and anonymous, making it difficult to tackle.
The talent I wish I had is… being able to sing well. I know I really can’t.
I can’t live without… friends, tennis and my favourite skin creams.
My ideal day would include… a good brunch and then several hours on a tennis court or a long hike followed by dinner in the pub with a quiz.
The show I’m currently obsessed with is… Industry.
The best piece of advice I’ve been given is… it’s the things you don’t do that you regret.
When I want to relax, I… get outdoors. Or I put on some classical music and do some cooking. I can always switch off when I am trying a new recipe.
In the next five years, I hope to… explore parts of the world I have never been to and have reached Partner level.
The best thing about being a member of CITMA is… the great learning content that is available and the friendly network.
