With Mr Russell’s appointment, the ministerial responsibility for IP has shifted from within the science and innovation portfolio to a newly altered role that is more focused on business and enterprise.
Dean Russell is the MP for Watford. Since being elected as an MP in 2019 he has served as a member of the health and social care select committee, and the joint committee on human rights.
In addition to IP, his new role includes responsibility for small business and enterprise, consumer and competition policy, and is Commons lead on Brexit opportunities.
There has not been a Minister for IP since George Freeman MP resigned from the role of Minister for Science, Research and Innovation in July 2022.
The IP portfolio sits within Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, led by The Rt Hon. Jacob Rees-Mogg MP as Secretary of State.
Adam Williams, interim CEO at the UK IPO, said:
“We look forward to working with Dean to ensure the UK’s IP environment continues to make a strong contribution to the Government’s agenda on innovation, trade and Global Britain, and remains a powerful enabler for growth.”
