Terry Johnson obituary
We were saddened to hear of the death of Terrence “Terry” Johnson.
Terry was a long standing figure in the world of intellectual property, including as an editor of our Trade Mark Handbook.
Following his graduation from the University of Manchester, he worked as a patent examiner for what is now the UK IPO before qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 1979.
He then moved to the practice Edward Evans and co, where he would remain for the rest of his professional life.
Terry became a senior partner in 1985. Edward Evans & Co. was part of the wider Marks & Clerk organisation and Terry was thus also a full partner of Marks & Clerk.
He fulfilled a variety of roles across the industry. He was president of COMSEC (now EUCOF), and was a very active member of FICPI . He served as president of the British Association of FICPI (FICPI-UK) and is a former Secretary General Adjointe, serving under the then president, Bernard Fisher, from 1988-1991.
Additionally, he regularly attended meetings of both the US Trade Mark Association (now INTA), AIPPI and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association.
In recent years, Terry developed a love of walking, both in the UK and in his adopted home in New Zealand.
He also had a long standing love for art, fast cars and wildlife, all of which he found time to fully appreciate.
Terry died from a heart attack on September 16th, 2021, at the age of 78.
